Long runs of ordinary spaces are where a big roll rate can burn through dice with little to show for it. Watch what is ahead, count the spaces, then decide whether the next roll is actually worth the risk.

Count the squares before raising the roll rate

The useful range is six to eight spaces from a railroad, a tournament pickup, or an event tile. Seven is the most common result from two dice, with six and eight close behind, so that little window matters more than most players realise. Don't just raise the rate because a reward is somewhere nearby. Count from your current square. If the target sits four spaces away, keep things calm. If it is seven away, that is when a larger roll can make sense.

Near Jail, chance spaces that don't help your current goal, or empty property sections, drop back to 1x. You are not giving up points; you are protecting dice for the next proper opening. A patient roll now can leave you in a much better spot a turn later.

Use leaderboard windows with purpose

Tournaments are often the best place to spend a higher roll rate because railroads can add a serious stack of points in one go. Check the prize track first, though. If the next reward is still far off, there is no need to force every railroad landing. Set a rough dice limit before you start.
